The thermal mineral water of Ovčar Spa springs at the heart of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, surrounded by the greenery of vast forest complexes. This hidden pearl of nature is located at the 17th kilometer of the Čačak- Zlatibor road, in the region of Western Serbia (M5). It is located in a small morphotectonic plateau, at the confluence of the Banjski stream into the Western Morava, at an altitude of 278 m.
In addition to the thermal mineral springs used in therapy, this spa is unique in Serbia because it is located in an area of exceptional features, surrounded by a river, lakes and the endless greenery of the Ovčar (985) and Kablar (885) mountains.
There is evidence that the waters of Ovčar Spa were used for medical treatment since Roman times, through the medieval and Turkish periods to the creation of the new Serbian state in the 19th century. On 29 th December 2011, Ovčar Spa was officially granted the status of a spa, which is of great importance for its further development.
The thermal waters in Ovčar Banja, 35-38 °C are a unique hydrographic feature of the area. The water is homeothermic, slightly sulfurous. The healing components of mineral water are macroelements - calcium and sodium; and microelements - potassium, lithium, strontium, barium, iodine, bromine, phosphorus, fluorine.
Spa guests who need therapy or a preventive examination are also served by professional medical staff within the Outpatient Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation "Banja Lek". The water is suitable for the treatment of several indicated diseases: rheumatic, degenerative changes (spondylosis and arthritis), sports injuries, and skin diseases.
In and around the Ovčar Spa, there are ten monasteries from the Middle Ages scattered within a small area, popularly known as the “Serbian Holy Mountain”. The monasteries of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge preserve the spiritual and artistic wealth created over the centuries. By visiting the monasteries, guests of Ovčar Banja can learn about the history of the Serbian people, the valuable cultural and historical heritage and the beauties of the monasteries of St Nicholas, Transfiguration and Annunciation, which are located in the spa itself, but also in other monasteries on the slopes of the Ovčar and Kablar mountains. A stay in Ovčar Banja can be very eventful, and accommodation can be provided in several guest houses and tourist and catering facilities located in the center of the spa. Among them, the “Kablar” Wellness Center certainly stands out, which, in addition to beautiful and comfortable rooms, also offers various wellness facilities and a swimming pool with thermal mineral water. The restaurant “Dom” on the riverbank, in addition to gastronomic specialties, offers quality accommodation, as well as a beautifully landscaped shore in an environment where guests of all ages can spend pleasant moments.
In addition to the thermal mineral water springs, nature has bestowed Ovčar Spa with the river and lakes whose banks are enjoyed by recreational athletes and true nature lovers. In the area of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, there are well-maintained fishing trails, with excellent conditions for angling. Marked hiking trails lead to monasteries where you can find spiritual peace and enjoy the view of nature, the outlines of forested mountains, and the West Morava River. Perhaps the most impressive sight on the guest will be the extraordinary view from the top of the Kablar mountains – the meanders of the West Morava River and the city of Čačak in the distance.
The Natural History Centre is located in the central part of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, in Ovčar Spa, surrounded by beautiful landscape. It houses an exhibition of species indigenous to the area of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge. The display was prepared in cooperation with the Natural History Museum in Belgrade. The exhibits represent specimens of individual vertebrate species – fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals that live in the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge.
Visitors to the Nature Center have the opportunity to learn about the tourist offer and buy souvenirs with motifs of the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge. The Natural History Centre has a space intended for organizing educational content, workshops and presentations.
During the summer months, concerts, performances, spiritual evenings, art colonies, and sporting events are organized in Ovčar Banja, the most attractive of which are a regatta, a swimming marathon, and a large mountain race.
